The Importance and Significance of First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah

The Importance and Significance of the

First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah

Dr Mozammel Haque

Every year Allah Subhanahu wa Taala has given hundreds and thousands of rewards or the door of blessings and rewards open for HIS slaves and worshippers – especially on two occasions – the last ten days of Ramadan along with the blessed Night of Power (Lailatul Qadr) immediately followed by a happy day for the worshippers – Eid-ul-Fitr. Similarly, instead of last ten days, this time the first ten days of the month of Dhul Hijjah is the blessed days – full of blessings and rewards from Allah Subhanahu wa Taala along with Arafah Day (9th of Dhul Hijjah) followed by a happy day – Eid-ul-Adha.

First day of Dhul-Hijjah

Friday 7th of June 2024

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court called on Muslims in the Kingdom to see if they can sight the Dhul Hijjah crescent on Thursday evening. Saudi Arabia has announced Dhul-Hijjah starts today, Friday, the 7th of June 2024 following  the sighting of  the crescent moon on Thursday evening. This will be the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic Hijri calender.

Arafat Day on Saturday, 15th of June 2024

Dhul-Hijjah, the 12th month of this year 1445 Hijri begins today, Friday, 7th of June 2024. Hajj will start on the 7th day of Dhul-Hijjah, corresponding to 14th of June and end on the 11th day of Dhul-Hijjah, corresponding to 18th of June. Arafat Day falls on the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah, corresponding to 15th of June, 2024. Eid-ul-Adha will begin inshaAllah on Sunday, the 16th of June 2024.

Now this first ten days of the month of Dhul Hijjah is very important and significant. Those who have gone for Hajj they will be in Makkah, Mina, Arafah and Muzdalifah. But those who are not in Makkah and other holy sites for them these days are very important days too. The earlier Muslims used to take this opportunity to make themselves better.

Importance of First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah

About the importance of the First ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him said: “There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days; meaning the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. (Bukhari).

And there is another Hadith about the fasting on the Arafat Day wherein Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him said: “Fasting on the Day of Arafat expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.” (Muslim)

Eid Mubarak to all of you and your families and everyone.

Kullu Aam wa Antum bil Khair.

Friday, 7th of June 2024 is the First day of Dhul-Hijjah 1445H. So the Day of Arafah will be on Saturday, the 15th of June 2024 the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah the Arafah day and Eid al-Adha will be Insha’Allah on Sunday the 16th of June 2024 corresponding to 10 Dhul-Hijjah 1445H after the day of Arafah. I wish everyone a blessed life full of happiness, peace and prosperity.

Ceasefire and Arms embargo on Israel in the British Parliament in May 2024

Ceasefire and Arms Embargo

on Israel in the British Parliament in May 2024

Dr Mozammel Haque

Labour Members of the British Parliament Afzal Khan and Zarah Sultana raised question on ceasefire and arms embargo on Israel in the House of Commons in the British Parliament in May 2024.

Afzal Khan

Labour Member of the British Parliament from the Constituency of Manchester Gorton, sent me a text saying Today (21May 2024) I repeated my calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and arms embargo on Israel.

Afzal Khan, M.P. said: “The majority of the British public support a ceasefire in Gaza and an arms embargo on Israel.

He continued, “The will of the British people must not be ignored. The Tories must now do the right thing.”

Zarah Sultana

On 22 May 2024, Labour Member of the British Parliament from the constituency of Coventry South said, “The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor is seeking arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity. This House does not aid and abet Hamas, but it does aid and abet Israel through the sale of arms, such as components for Israeli F-35s—known as the most lethal fighter jet on earth—which are raining down hell on Gaza.”

Zarah Sultana asked, “Will the Prime Minister uphold international law, drop the nonsense about the most robust licensing system in the world and end arms sales to Israel? If the ICC issues arrest warrants, will he comply by ensuring that those individuals are arrested if they enter the UK?”

 Rishi Sunak

British Prime Minister

The British Prime Minister replied, “It is always nice to see the changed Labour party in action. When it comes to the ICC, this is a deeply unhelpful development, which of course is still subject to a final decision. There is no moral equivalence between a democratically elected Government exercising their lawful right to self-defence and the actions of a terrorist group, and the actions of the ICC do absolutely nothing to get a pause in the fighting, or to get the hostages out or aid in.

Hajj - A Lifetime Spiritual Journey

 Hajj: A Lifetime Spiritual Journey

Dr. Mozammel Haque

ISLAM IS A PRACTICAL RELIGION which lays down a complete code of life. It makes various provisions for creating peace and harmony in the lives of mankind as well as in the universe. Peace and harmony can be achieved only when there is solidarity and universal brotherhood among human beings. Islam preaches this concept and puts it into practice through the unique annual assemblage of the pilgrims during Hajj.

The institution of Hajj in Islam is quite extraordinary and unparalleled. It is only Islam that has made the annual assemblage at one place, Makkah, an obligation for the capable Muslims from all corners of the world. In other words, it may be called the World Muslim Congress. This assembly has many distinctive features which no other gathering has and no other religion stipulates. The concept of unity and brotherhood is embedded in Islam in such a way that one is truly amazed to see millions of Muslims dressed in two white sheets of cloth gathered at one particular place, i.e. in Arafat during a fixed time on certain fixed days in the year. All human and man-made barriers and distinctions are demolished during that assembly.

We shall here deal with the aspects of unity and universal brotherhood which, besides others, are quintessential among the concepts of Hajj. First, let us take universal brotherhood. This universal brotherhood emanates from the following basic concepts and is demonstrated in a most authentic and brilliant manner here on this occasion:

Adam is the first man from whom all human beings have sprung up;

Abraham is the father of monotheistic religion;

Acceptance of all prophets as prophets of God;

Belief in all revealed books of Allah.

Thus, this acceptance of Abraham as the patriarch of the concept of Tawheed and recognition of the continuity of Prophethood from Prophet Adam to the Last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and having faith in all revealed books keeps up a chain of faith known as Islam throughout the world. This binds the whole humankind into a bond of brotherhood whose genealogical father is Adam and the spiritual father Abraham. Thus Muslims believe in the continuation of the human race on earth. There are no conflicts and controversies in the monotheistic religion decreed by God. All Muslims (those who consciously and willingly surrender to the Will of the Creator) belong to this Ummah and therefore constitute a fraternity of faith. This is one way the Hajj conveys the message of universal brotherhood.

This aspect of universal brotherhood can also be noticed during Hajj when Muslims come from remote corners of the world and congregate in Makkah in the vicinity of the House of God, i.e. Baitullah. Though they might have come from the east or west, north or south, and all differences in colour, language, race and nationality notwithstanding, they find their oneness on the basis of their faith in One God, One Qiblah, One Book and One Prophet.

The practical training for this universal brotherhood starts from the local or neighbourhood level with the five times daily prayers in the mosque, which gets enlarged with the Friday prayers once a week. The circle is again made substantially larger during the Eid prayer, and it becomes internationalised transforming into a global gathering once in a lifetime. So the concept and training in universal brotherhood, which reaches its peak, starts from the very childhood at the local level.

As regards unity, Islam, first of all, removed all man-made bonds and barriers bringing all human beings into one global family tracing their genealogical origin to common parents and biological chemistry to one element, i.e. clay. Almighty God has laid down in the Holy Qur’an, “O Mankind, We have created you from a male and a female.” (49: 13) This establishment of absolute equality on the basis of their ancestral origin and biological composition removes all artificial differences between man and man.

The enforcement of the concept of Muslim brotherhood is the greatest social ideal of Islam. Islam places emphasis on unity and unifies mankind on the basis of one God, one Book - the Qur’an, one Qibla - the Ka’aba and one leader - the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Noble Prophet’s mission was to establish unity and peace throughout the world. The Islamic concept of unity transcends all other forms of unity based on territory, geographical boundary, linguistic and ethnic affinity. He united Muslims on the basis of faith, which is the Oneness of God, Islam.

On this vital concept was based the Prophet’s sermon in his last pilgrimage, which shows that Islam cannot be completely practiced until this ideal is achieved. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) unified and cemented the Muslim Ummah under the banner of La ilaha illallah Muhammadur-Rasoolullah by establishing the first-ever Islamic state in Madina, which later on took the shape of a grand Caliphate. Under the Caliphate the Muslim Ummah was unified and integrated. Thus the first concept of universal and worldwide unity was demonstrated by Prophet Muhammad more than fourteen hundred years ago having been guided and inspired by God for establishing unity and peace in the world.

Islam is essentially a community and group-oriented religion. So, the practical lesson in unity and equality first starts within the family, then in the neighbourhood, especially through the institution of five daily prayers in the mosque and still on a larger scale in the locality, during weekly Friday prayers, and then in much larger gatherings in the two Eid prayers and ultimately in the international or global gathering during Hajj. This very characteristic and feature of Islam demonstrates the universality of this religion and its heavenly origin which transcends all worldly barriers of race, colour, class and nationality.

Pilgrimage is the best occasion to bind again the loose threads, tighten them on the basis of belief and in the presence of God and frustrate the nefarious machinations of the enemies of the Ummah’s unity.

Another aspect of Hajj is making sacrifice in the way of God for the cause of Islam. As Islam itself is a religion of sacrifice, its different pillars also contain the same features and characteristics. It is a known fact that the Islamic or Hijra calendar starts with the month of Muharram and ends with the month of Hajj. The first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram, is the month of sacrifice – a sacrifice made by the grandson of Muhammad, Hussain ibn Ali, who laid down his life at Kufa in the cause of Islam and its ideals. Similarly, the 12 months of the Hijra calendar, the month of Hajj, marks the remembrance of the sacrifice made by the Prophet Ibrahim for the sake of God and His Pleasure.

The Patriarch, the first Prophet of monotheistic religion, Islam, the Prophet Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice his most loved one for the sake of God. He loved his only son, Ismail, more than anything else. God asked him to sacrifice Ismail. Ibrahim was going to sacrifice Ismail, in the way of God by His Order. The Holy Qur’an explains the story of Ibrahim and his son Ismail thus:

Then when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: “O my son; I see in vision that I offer you in sacrifice. Now say what is your view.” (The son) said: “O my father; do as you are commanded; you will find me, if God so wills, one practising patience and constancy.” So when they had both submitted their wills (to God), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice), We called out to him, “O Ibrahim; you have already fulfilled the vision; thus indeed do We reward those who do right.” (37:102-105) The Qur’an says: “And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice.” (37:107)

The sacrifices made by Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail for the love of God left an indelible imprint on the history of mankind. This sacrifice is still remembered and re-enacted during Hajj. Ibrahim left a glorious record of sacrifice to please God.

In modern times, sacrifice is symbolised by an act of slaughtering a camel, cow or lamb for the sake of God during the days of Eid-al Adha, i.e. starting after the Eid prayer till the sunset on the third day of Eid. Sacrifice is a strongly recommended Sunnah of the Prophet and was introduced in the second year after Hijra. The purpose of sacrifice is to remind oneself of the great sacrifice of Ibrahim.

The sacrifice of life and wealth in the way of God is the zenith of a man’s belief. God says: “By no means shall you attain righteousness unless you give (freely) of that which you love; and whatever you give, of a truth God knows it well.” (Al-Qur’an 3:92) This means that when something, which has been held so dear, is sacrificed in the way of God one may hope to secure God’s Pleasure. The verse tells us that to attain righteousness one has to sacrifice things, but to attain it in perfection one has to sacrifice things, dearer to one.

Every sacrifice and every effort is to be aimed at seeking God’s Pleasure. That God be pleased with us is the real capital of our lives and it is to win this pleasure that everything should be sacrificed. In the words of the Qur’an: “Surely my prayers and my sacrifice, my life and my death is for God alone, the Lord of the Universe.”

In the modern age, the pilgrims, when they start their journey to Makkah for performing Hajj with only two white sheets on their bodies leaving behind their wives, children, kith and kin and their wealth and properties, they practically exemplify their act of sacrifice for the love of God.

Hajj is the greatest training and practical demonstration of the spirit of sacrifice and the spirit of Jihad in the way of God. It shows that Islam does not end with giving some utopian ideals for the human life. It is not only a religion, it is the guidance for the whole mankind to shape their lives in this world and hereafter. That’s why God makes provision for the teaching and training of humankind in every quality through practical implementation.

Debate on Iran-Israel Statement in the British Parliament continued...

Debate on Iran-Israel Statement at the House of Commons

in the British Parliament - continued.. 2

Dr Mozammel Haque

Though the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunah MP gave a Iran-Israel statement in the House of Commons in the British Parliament on 15 April 2024 the debate and discussion was most of the time time around humanitarian situation in Gaza – such as the death and destruction and humanitarian situation in Gaza and West Bank; imminent famine or ongoing famine in the Palestinian territories; the UN Secretary General’s comment on the situation and about the funding of UNRWA and the question of export of weapons to Israel and above all, asking for the protection of women and children from Israeli attacks and calling for an immediate ceasefire to end the destruction in Gaza and taking steps towards peace by calling a permanent ceasefire and bringing aid to Gaza.

Followings are what the members of Parliament debated in the House of Commons in the British Parliament on 15th of April, 2024.

Continued…

Mr Alistair Carmichael

(Orkney and Shetland) (LD)

Lib. Dem Member of Parliament for the constituency of Orkney and Shetland, Alistair Carmichael, said, “When he speaks to Prime Minister Netanyahu, will he make it clear to him that if Israel were now to proceed with its much-anticipated attack on Rafah, it would be not only a humanitarian catastrophe for the 1.5 million Palestinians who are sheltering there and make the release of the hostages more difficult, but make that stability and de-escalation more difficult to achieve and, as a consequence, would not have the support of this Government?”

Seema Malhotra

(Feltham and Heston) (Lab/Co-op)

Labour/Co-Op Member of Parliament for the constituency of Feltham and Heston, Seema Malhotra, said, “The core issue now must be de-escalation, an immediate ceasefire on all sides to end the devastating situation in Gaza, and a political solution for the long term. UNRWA is arguably the single biggest multilateral tool to support a political solution, and it is unmatched in its administrative ability to deliver aid. The UK stands behind other countries in not renewing funding to UNRWA. Further to the question of my hon. Friend the Member for Battersea (Marsha De Cordova), will the Prime Minister set out a clear path for funding to resume?

Ms Anum Qaisar

(Airdrie and Shotts) (SNP)

SNP Member of Parliament for the constituency of Airdrie and Shotts, Ms Anum Qaisar, said, “The events of the weekend mark a dangerous new chapter in a long history of conflict in the middle east. Does the Prime Minister accept that proportionality is key and must include the conduct of all parties, including the 192 days of uninterrupted and constant bombardment of Gaza in response to what was, of course, a horrific attack by Hamas? That has killed over 33,000 civilians in Gaza, a place where children look to the sky not knowing if aid or bombs are going to fall on them. I ask the Prime Minister: is that proportionate?”

Andy Slaughter

(Hammersmith) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Hammersmith, Andy Slaughter, said, “The Prime Minister rightly calls for restraint and de-escalation in the middle east, but is there not more chance that his words will carry weight if a ceasefire is advocated for all sides, including the warring parties in Gaza?”

Jeremy Corbyn

(Islington North) (Ind)

Independent Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Islington North, Jeremy Corbyn, said, “Thirty-three thousand people have died in Gaza. More bombs have been dropped there than were dropped in the whole of the Iraq war. This weekend’s horrific events show the danger of a war escalating across the whole region. Does the Prime Minister recognise that the kernel of the whole issue across the region is the continued Israeli occupation of Palestine? What does he say about bringing an end to that occupation, and calling for a permanent ceasefire?”mn8is

Andrew Gwynne

(Denton and Reddish) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Denton and Reddish, Andrew Gwynne, said, “I echo the calls for restraint and de-escalation. I was interested in what the Prime Minister said about the diplomatic efforts over the past six months, with the Palestinian Authority looking towards a two-state solution. Given that the issues are settlements, water and access between Gaza and the west bank and Jerusalem, what window of opportunity does he think there is with the Netanyahu Government to get all parties round the table?”

Janet Daby

(Lewisham East) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Lewisham East, Janet Daby, said, “Yesterday, the United Nations Secretary-General said:

“The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate”.

Does the Prime Minister agree with the Secretary-General, and if so, what is the Government’s strategy to achieve this, as the Prime Minister works with our international allies?”

Barry Gardiner

(Brent North) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Brent North, Barry Gardiner, said, “Iran sought to justify its unjustifiable attack on Israel on the basis that it was retaliating for Israel’s attack on its consulate. I welcome the fact that the Prime Minister said that in his telephone conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu later today, he will urge de-escalation. In that telephone conversation, will he set out the measures that the UK will take if, in fact, Israel seeks to retaliate further?”

Beth Winter

(Cynon Valley) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Cynon Valley, Beth Winter, said, “Diolch yn fawr, Madam Deputy Speaker. At the Security Council last night, the UN Secretary-General warned of “devastating full-scale conflict” and called for de-escalation and maximum restraint. Today, the Foreign Secretary said in response that there could have been “thousands of casualties” and pressure for an escalation of this conflict. Does the Prime Minister agree with that, and does he also agree that the very real tens of thousands of deaths and casualties that Israel’s military attacks and imposed famine conditions have caused in Gaza are drivers of regional instability?

Mohammad Yasin

(Bedford) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Bedford, Mohammad Yasin, said, “Four former UK Supreme Court judges and more than 600 lawyers, including over 60 KCs, have warned the Prime Minister that the UK risks breaking international law relating to a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza if it does not stop its weapons exports to Israel. The Prime Minister is ignoring their warnings and hiding his Government’s legal advice on this matter. Why, Prime Minister?”

Debbie Abrahams

(Oldham East and Saddleworth) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Oldham East and Saddleworth, Debbie Abrahams, said, “The middle east has entered a very dangerous new phase that can be resolved only by diplomatic and political solutions. Can I push the Prime Minister on what he said earlier about the sanctions that he is considering taking, with international allies, against Iran, including the proscribing of the IRGC? Will he also confirm that the UK will not take part in any offensive action of Israel’s?

Helen Hayes

(Dulwich and West Norwood) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Dulwich and West Norwood, Helen Hayes, said, “The Prime Minister said in his statement that it was important that aid gets into Gaza, and he said a few moments ago that the Government were right to take their time in deciding on the restoration of funding to UNRWA. The organisational infrastructure of UNRWA is unparalleled and cannot be replicated. A further delay on the part of the UK Government will cost further lives, in a context in which famine is taking hold. I urge the Prime Minister to think again and to today set out a path for the restoration of funding to UNRWA.”

Mr Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi (Slough) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Slough, Mr Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, said, “Iran is of course no ally of the UK, and its huge unprecedented assault on Israel must be called out, but the UK Government must now work hard to prevent further escalation of the crisis in an already volatile region. It is a matter of principle that diplomatic premises are not targeted, so will the Prime Minister confirm what conversations he has had with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu about the attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria, or whether he plans to discuss that with him?”

Christine Jardine

(Edinburgh West) (LD)

Lib. Dem Member of Parliament for the constituency of Edinburgh West, Christine Jardine, asked, “ Can the Prime Minister assure us that when he speaks to the Prime Minister of Israel later today, he will impress upon him not only the need for restraint to restabilise the region, but the unique opportunity he has now to take steps towards peace by promoting a ceasefire and allowing aid into Gaza?”

Mr Toby Perkins

(Chesterfield) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Chesterfield, Mr. Toby Perkins, said, “The question from the right hon. Member for North Somerset (Sir Liam Fox) exposed that there is much more we could be doing to undermine the murderous Iranian regime. Simultaneously, the way that Israel continues to ignore the United Nations resolution is deeply troubling. Is the Prime Minister worried that his approach at the moment risks failing, both on Iran and on Israel?”

Emma Hardy

(Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle, Emma Hardy, said, “In response to my hon. Friend the Member for Feltham and Heston (Seema Malhotra), the Prime Minister said that he would take the time to set the right future approach to UNRWA. As the famine continues, I wonder how much time the Prime Minister needs before he makes up his mind to restore funding and get aid to the people who need it.”

Claudia Webbe

(Leicester East) (Ind)

Independent Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Leicester East, Claudia Webbe, said, “Since the UK is clearly capable of acting to prevent air strikes in the region, and both the International Court of Justice and the UN special rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories have implicated Israel in a genocide in Gaza, why are the Government not interested in fulfilling their obligations under international law by protecting Palestinian women and children from Israeli airstrikes? Why are the Government not acting to prevent the killing of Palestinians?”

s located here

Matt Western

(Warwick and Leamington) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Warwick and Leamington, Matt Western, said, “The threat of imminent famine hangs over the people of Gaza; aid urgently needs to get into the country and to be safely distributed. With the deaths of those three UK charity workers, working for World Central Kitchen, will the Prime Minister confirm whether he has received a written apology from the Prime Minister of Israel?

Alan Brown

(Kilmarnock and Loudoun) (SNP)

SNP Member of Parliament for the constituency of Kilmarnock and Loudoun, Alan Brown, said, “ Over 33,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, including 14,000 children. Some 76,000 civilians have been injured or maimed and 700 healthcare and aid workers have been killed. There is an ongoing famine, and the UK Government under the Prime Minister’s watch are now trying to find ways around the Israeli blockade that is preventing aid from getting in; is that not in itself an admission that the ongoing Israeli actions are disproportionate, and should we not be calling them out as such?”

Kim Johnson

(Liverpool, Riverside) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Liverpool, Riverside, Kim Johnson, said, “The middle east is in a crisis, and I and thousands of my Riverside constituents have been calling for a ceasefire to end the destruction in Gaza and prevent a widening conflict in the middle east. The Prime Minister has talked about diplomatic action towards a two-state solution. Can he say what action he is taking against the far-right Ministers in the Israeli Government who are opposed to a two-state solution?”

Michael Shanks

(Rutherglen and Hamilton West) (Lab)

Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency of  Rutherglen and Hamilton West, Michael Shanks, said, “On the wider humanitarian crisis in Gaza, there is now a famine across the area. In response to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for Battersea (Marsha De Cordova), I think the Prime Minister said that he has received the interim report on UNRWA and that in due course he will receive the final report. Will he publish the interim report, and if not, why not? With Canada, France, Finland, Australia, Sweden and the EU having now restored funding, why does the UK stand alone?
