Khutbah at Masjid al-Haram: We need Good Role Model Among Man and Woman

Dr. Mozammel Haque

Friday, the 16th of October, 2020 Sheikh Dr Faisal Jameel Ghazzawi, Imam at the Grand Mosque of Makkah delivered Jumah Khutbah. He said, “Today We Need Good Role Model among Man and Woman.”

“As we need good role models since first initiators are among the men; similarly we need among the woman celebrities and those people, those female who can be first ever to start a good and new initiative in setting the example for the rest of the humanity and the rest of the believers. As Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala said that all man and woman, whatever they do good deeds, they will be valued and they will be rewarded abundantly whether they are man or woman. So we need role model among the man and woman also. And in every field of life, believers need good role models and good new initiative to do good and forbid evil,” said the Imam of the Masjid al-Haram, Makkah al-Mukarramah, Sheikh Dr. Faisal Jameel  Ghazzawi on Friday, 16 October, 2020.

The   first Muslims from the Muhajirin and Ansars who accepted Islam they are  the highest and fastest people to reach successful. Among the first to accept the Message of Islam, said Imam of Masjid al-Haram, was the wife of Muhammad Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam Khadija. Among children Saiyyidina Ali and among adult – Sayyidina Abu Bakr Siddique Radhiallahu Anhu (RA).

Then the Imam Ghazzawi mentioned that the scholars said that the first ever Muslims were seven people – apart from Muhammad Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam Abu Bakr RA, Saiyyidina Khadija RA and Ammar and Sumayya, Suhaib and Belal and Miqdad R.A. Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam has reported that among the high famous messengers like Ibrahim alaihis Salam.

Among the Prophets, the first ever was Ibrahim alaihis salam. Sheikh Ghazzawi mentioned, Allah has mentioned His first things in the Qur’an and our Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam has classified Ibrahim alaihis Salam from among the first people ever to perfect the art of hosting or the art of looking after the guests.

Beyond the Prophets, among the companions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, Sheikh Ghazzawi mentioned, apart from Abu Bakr, being  the first Muslim, Saiyyidina Omar ibn Khattab RA is known to have instituted the first ever the public trust or family trust for the benefit of his family and the public in general. Similarly, Abu Jarrah RA reported that he was the first to say Assalam Alaikum, Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam replied wa alaikum wa salam wa Rahmatullahe wa Barakatuh. Saad ibn Aqqas RA was the first to send to use archery to defend Islam and for the cause of Islam. Sumayya RA was the first Shahida or martyr of Islam. Bilal RA is the first ever Muazzin of Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam.

Beyond the companions of the Prophet peace be upon him, among the Tabeyeen, the imam of the Masjid al-Haram mentioned, Imam Bukhari was the first ever compilation of the only authentic Hadith – Sahih Al-Bukhari. His full name was Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Ismail al-Bukhari. Besides this the Imam of the Masjid al-Haram also mentioned about charies in the first part of the Khutbah.

In the second part of the Khutbah, Sheikh Dr. Ghazzawi mentioned about those who ever committed the most heinous crimes against humanity.

Full Khutbah of Masjid al-Haram

Followings are the full Khutbah delivered by the Imam of the Masjid al-Haram, Makkah al-Mukarramah, Imam Sheikh Dr. Faisal Jameel Ghazzawi. (Rendered into English by Mufti Barkatullah via Islam Channel UK).

Imam of Masjid al-Haram started by saying, “All praise goes to Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala who is very very apparent with His Attributes to all His friends and we should be thankful to Allah for all the favours He has bestowed us. We bear witness that there is no one partner or associate with Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. No one can resemble Divine; we cannot praise enough to Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala as He can do praise Himself. I bear witness that He is the Superior Deity worthy of worship. We are thankful to Allah for giving us excellent qualities. I bear witness that Our Prophet and Servant of Allah Muhammad is His messenger and His servant on earth. May Allah send peace and blessings on him.”

He said, “After praising and salutation let us remind ourselves that we should be careful and be afraid of Allah to follow all His commandments and Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam. And we should compete with each other to do good deeds and to do Zikr Allah. It is one of the favours of Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala that He made us compete each other with good deeds and for success and higher success and higher. Among the chosen people are those who are fastest and highest in their obedience to Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala.”

Sheikh Dr. Ghazzawi mentioned, “As Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala grace them, the first Muslim from the Muhajirin and from the Ansars those who accepted Islam, they are the highest and the fastest people to reach successful. Among the Sahabah they used to keep records of who accepted the message of Islam earliest possible – among the first people to accept the message of Islam was the wife of Muhammad Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam Khadija. Among children Saiyyidina Ali and among adult – Sayyidina Abu Bakr Siddique Radhiallahu Anhu (RA).Those who are the first to accept the guidance of Islam nobody can compete with them in terms of any good deeds they have done later on. And those who are ahead of everyone else their positions only Allah can determine.”

The first ever Muslims were seven people

Imam Ghazzawi said, “Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala mentions that those who accept the guidance earlier than others they are the successful people. As scholars said that the first ever Muslims were seven people – apart from Muhammad Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam Abu Bakr RA, Saiyyidina Khadija RA and Ammar and Sumayya, Suhaib and Belal and Miqdad R.A. Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam has reported that among the high famous messengers like Ibrahim alaihis Salam.”

Ibrahim AS – First ever Art of

Looking After the Guests

Sheikh Dr. Ghazzawi said, “Allah has mentioned His first things in the Qur’an and our Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam has classified Ibrahim alaihis Salam from among the first people ever to perfect the art of hosting or the art of looking after the guests. As Islam and our Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam has come to perfect every good character; similarly Prophet alaihis Salam has said that it is a requirement of the believer to honour his guest at least three days. Being hospitable to travellers or to the guest is to establish Sunnah of the Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam and one of the honourable activities. Similarly, Saiyyidina Ibrahim alaihis wa Salam is known to be administering the circumcision among the humanity.”

Omar ibn al-Khattab – First to have

instituted the Public Trust

He also said, “Beyond the Prophets, now we come to the companions of the Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam Apart from Abu Bakr, being  the first Muslim, Saiyyidina Omar ibn Khattab RA is known to have instituted the first ever the public trust or family trust for the benefit of his family and the public in general.”

Abu Jarrah RA – the first to say Assalamu Alaikum

Imam of the Masjid al-Haram mentioned, “Similarly, Abu Jarrah RA he reported that he was the first to say Assalam Alaikum, Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam replied wa alaikum wa salam wa Rahmatullahe wa Barakatuh. Our Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam has added that it is the best part of Islam to greet each other with the greetings of Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala – peace and blessings. Our Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam has altered; Jahiliyya people used to say good morning. Our Prophet Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam said Allah has given us a better alternative – peace and blessings of Allah be upon you.”

Saad Ibn Aqqas RA - The First ever to use Archery

He continued, “The other first ever the use of archery in the battlefield , Saad ibn Aqqas RA was the first to send to use archery to defend Islam and further the cause of Islam. This was done on the battle of Uhud and Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam was assisting Saad ibn Aqqas to use archery to defend Muslims and dispel the non-Muslims, the enemies.”

Sumayya RA – The First ever Shahida (Martyr) of Islam

Imam of the Haram also mentioned, “Sumayya RA it is reported that she was the first Shahida of Islam. She was tortured till death in Makkah. So this was the first martyr. She was the mother of Amaar ibn Yasir.”

Bilal RA – The First Ever Muazzin of Rasulullah

He continued, “As Bilal RA was among the first Muslim among the slaves but in Madinah he was the first to call Azan based on the guidance of Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam. So he is the first ever Muazzin of Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam.”

Sahih al-Bukhari – the First Ever

Compilation of Authentic Hadiths

Sheikh Dr. Ghazzawi said, “Beyond  Sahabas, among the Tabeyeen, Umar ibn Abdulaziz, a caliph is reported to be keen to collect all the sayings of Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam. So he commissioned scholars to record as much as possible from the Sayings of the Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam as it is reported by Allama ibn Hajr Rahimullah. As you know among the most famous Sahih Books of Hadiths is Imam Bukhari ibn Ismail. His is ever first compilation of only authentic Hadith – his Sahih al-Bukhari. His full name is Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari.”

Imam of Masjid al-Haram  also mentioned, “Among the charities when Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam auction and called upon Muslims to come with their charities in this Masjid of Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam Ansars and Muhajirin competed with each other and one person brought a bag full of gold and silver he hardly could hold it. Our Prophet Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam was said that one who makes first ever in good deeds he gets the reward of others. May Allah give us Tawfiq to be the first to do the good deeds. May Allah forgive us and give us Tawfiq.Allah is the oft-forgiving.”

Imam said, “Praise Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala for all the favours He has given us and we bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam is His Messenger and His servant. Muhammad Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam was sent as a Mercy of Mankind. May Allah send peace and blessings on Muhammad Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam and his family and his companions till the Day of Judgement.”

Invitors of Humanity Toward Fire

Speaking about the invitors of humanity towards fire, Sheikh Dr. Ghazzawi said, “As we have discussed and presented all those people who are ever initiators of the good deeds; similarly in the Qur’an Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala mentioned those who ever committed the most heinous crimes against humanity; they are called the invitors of the humanity towards fire.”

Omar Ibn Ameer – First person who introduced Shirk

Imam of the Masjid al-Haram mentioned, “The first person who introduced the shirk and some rituals against the sunnah of the Prophet Ibrahim alayis Salam, the one person called Omar Ibn Ameer. He was holding his belly open in the Jahannum, as Rasulullah said. Similarly, Habeel and Kabeel story is in the Qur’an and Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam said that the one who killed or committed the first ever murder all the murderers later on some share of it will be on the first person who has ever committed the murder and make this habit among the human beings. Allah is great and above all the transgressors and very very high.”

He also said, “Musa Alayis Salam is reported in the Qur’an that he was so keen to come in the meeting place where Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala has promised him to give Taurah and he hastened towards this goodness but then his nation was left behind and they were put through trouble and trials. Similarly, Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala is warning the people of the Book that since  they have the message of Allah through Musa Alayis Salam, they should not be among the first people to reject the message of Rasulullah Sallallahu alayis wa salam.”

First initiators of good deeds and the

first initiators of setting the scene of crime

Speaking about the good deeds, Sheikh Dr. Ghazzawi said, “As our history is rich – the human history is rich – with the first initiators of ever good deeds and also the first initiators of ever setting the scene of crime; today the most dire need is to initiate many good practices and good deeds and always try to be innovative in terms of innovation in goodness and dawah and spreading the message of Ilah.  Not just the message of Islam but of course observing the highest standard of morality and love, unity and inviting the humanity to be good and do good and any new initiatives and unique initiatives in this regard will be very handsomely rewarded by Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala.”

Today we need role models among

the man and the woman also

Imam of the Masjid al-Haram continued, “As we need good role models since first initiators are among the man; similarly we need among the woman celebrities and those people, those female who can be first ever to start a good and new initiative in setting the example for the rest of the humanity and the rest of the believers. As Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala said that all man and woman, whatever they do good deeds, they will be valued and they will be rewarded abundantly whether they are man or woman. So we need role model among the man and woman also. And in every field of life, believers need good role models and good new initiative to do good and forbid evil.”

He said, “Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala urges us to make dua for Rasulullah Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam. O Muslim send peace and blessings. So we ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala to send peace and blessings on Muhammad Sallullahu alayhe Wa Sallam and his family as Allah has sent peace and blessings on Ibrahim alaihis salam and his family. O Allah, give prominence to Islam, religion of Islam and the believers. O Allah, give us peace and mercy; O Allah, make this land and all the lands of Muslims – land of peace and tranquillity. O Allah, give Tawfiq to all the rulers of the Muslim lands to do good and do good to the people.”

Imam of the Masjid al-Haram concluded by making dua and supplication, “O Allah, give Tawfiq to do good and refrain from sinful activities. O Allah, help all those who are working for the security of Muslim lands and Muslim communities. O Allah, accept all our good deeds. O Allah, save us from all bad illnesses and pandemic and viruses from Junoon (Madness), Juzam (Leprosy) and all the other worst type of illness. O Allah, we have wrong ourselves, so if you do not forgive us we will be losers. O Allah, forgive all our sins, give goodness in this world and hereafter and send peace and blessings on Prophet and his companions.”

Debate on the Settlement and Annexation of the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the House of Commons

Dr Mozammel Haque

Stephen Kinnock the Labour Member for the Aberavon moved the House to consider and debate on this crucially important topic on the settlement and annexation of the Occupied Palestinian territories.

While moving this sensitive but incredibly important issue on Monday, 24 September 2020, the Labour Member for Aberavon, Stephen Kinnock mentioned this debate on settlement and annexation of the occupied Palestinian territories is about striving for peace, justice and security for all. He also said we condemn violence in all its forms and we believe passionately in the Rule of Law. But he pointed out that Israel’s consistent flouting of UN resolutions and the fourth Geneva Conventions, and Israeli illegal settlements undermine all three of the principles.

In this connection, Stephen Kinnock, MP, also mentioned about the so-called Abraham Accords and President Donald Trump’s Deal of the Century. While referring to the Deal of the Century, he said, it is not a deal; it is not a plan; it is a proposal that is fundamentally flawed. Israeli’s huge settlement plan of 7,000 units is a threat to the feasibility of a Two-state solution, he said and added, Abraham Accords is in Reality the creeping annexation of Palestinians lands increasing and accelerating.

The UK government takes immediate steps with urgency, The Member for Aberavon said and mentioned, government (i) Immediately recognise the State of Palestine, (ii) government must ban all products originated from Israeli settlements, (iii) End the involvement of UK-based companies within the illegal settlements, (iv) Easy to forget the human cost of the Conflict. Act Now, emphasized Stephen Kinnock, MP.

In reply to the debate, The Minister for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), James Cleverly said, the Middle East Peace process is a complex and sensitive issue but he welcome the announcement of normalisation of relations between Israel, UAE and Bahrain. He also expressed his desire to have a stable, secure and peaceful Two-state solution. As regards annexation, the Minister James Cleverly MP mentioned UK’s position on annexation. The Minister said we oppose annexation.

Followings are the details of the debate on the settlement and annexation of the occupied Palestinian territories secured by the Labour MP for the Aberavon, Stephen Kinnock  and the reply by the Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, James Cleverly in the House of Commons.

Stephen Kinnock (Aberavon) (Lab)

Labour MP for Aberavon, Stephen Kinnock secured this debate on the settlement and annexation of the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the House of Commons on Monday, 24th of September 2020. A number of Members from cross-section of parties of the House have participated in this debate.

It is about striving for peace,

justice and security for all

The Labour MP for Aberavon started by setting out three core principles. He said, “First, this is not about religion or ethnicity. It is not a question of Arab, Muslim or Jewish identity. It is about upholding the universal norms and values that we hold dear, and it is about working to constrain and reverse the actions of those who seek to undermine those norms and values. Nor is this about being pro-Israel or pro-Palestine. This is about striving for peace, justice and security for all.

We condemn violence in all its forms

“Secondly, we condemn violence in all its forms, whether it is Hamas launching rockets or the Israel Defence Forces bombarding Gaza or bulldozing Bedouin villages to make way for illegal settlements. We oppose any and all actions that lead to the death and destruction that have so tragically come to define this conflict.

We believe passionately in the Rule of Law

“Thirdly, we believe passionately in the rule of law. Indeed, our point of departure is that the rule of law is not up for negotiation. It is not some bargaining chip that can be tossed on to the table in exchange for concessions or compromises; it is the very cornerstone of the rules-based order and the bedrock of the norms, rights and values that we cherish and seek to defend.”

Israel’s consistent flouting of UN resolutions

and the fourth Geneva Convention

Stephen Kinnock also said, “Israel’s consistent flouting of UN resolutions and the fourth Geneva Convention has undermined the rules-based order for decades, and the international community can no longer just look the other way. Both sides in this conflict have witnessed horrific bloodshed and both sides deserve an end to the fear and suffering that they have had to experience. That is why it is so vital and urgent that the rule of law be brought to bear as the foundation upon which a viable and sustainable Palestine can be negotiated and built—a Palestine that protects the rights of its citizens and lives in peace with its neighbours.”

Illegal Israeli settlements undermine

all three of the principles

The Member for Aberavon also mentioned, “The illegal Israeli settlements undermine all three of the principles that I have set out. They drive and amplify the vicious identity politics that poisons this conflict. They cause violence on a daily basis and they are a flagrant breach of international law, yet they continue and expand.”

“In 2018, we marked 25 years since the signing of the Oslo accords. That moment in 1993 was meant to herald a new and lasting era of peace and co-existence—the beginning of a genuine two-state solution—but since then, the number of illegal settlers has increased from 258,000 to more than 610,000. Fifty thousand homes and properties have been demolished, and an illegal separation barrier has been built that carves up the west bank and brutally disconnects towns, cities, families and communities from each other. What have the Israeli people experienced in that time? They have experienced insecurity, fear of attacks through suicide bombings, rockets and mortars, knife attacks and car rammings. None of this will end while there is no proper peace and no end to the occupation. It has been a disaster for all sides in this conflict,” Stephen Kinnock mentioned.

So-called Abraham Accords- We should be realistic

In reply to a question on the so-called Abraham Accords, Stephen Kinnock said, “We certainly welcome any steps towards peace and conflict resolution, but we should be realistic about what the so-called Abraham accords really signify. The reality is that the United Arab Emirates and Israel have never been at war with each other. They have pre-existing and long-standing relations. Indeed, they have co-operated on military matters, in counter-revolutions, and in coups in many of the Arab League states. We should be realistic that this is really more the formalisation of pre-existing relations, rather than something new. Nevertheless, it is to be welcomed.”

President Trump Deal

“the reality is that the constant feature of everything that has happened since 1993 has been the expansion of the settlements, which are a flagrant breach of international law. Once we start to erode the foundations of international law on which all the negotiations are based, they are rendered effectively meaningless. We need to bear that in mind as we look back on what has happened since 1993, but it is also vital that we look to the future with hope and optimism,” Member for Aberavon mentioned.

It is not a Deal; it is a proposal

that is fundamentally flawed

Stephen Kinnock said, “It is against that backdrop that President Trump and the Prime Minister Netanyahu have come forward with their so-called deal of the century. This is not a deal. It is not a plan. It is not even a starting point for talks. It is a proposal that is fundamentally flawed because it has no basis in law. It is a land and power grab that would mean Israel seizing around 40% of the west bank, with full military and security control over the Palestinian people and their resources. Which Government, in their right mind, would ever agree to such terms? Why would the Palestinian Authority ever enter into talks on the basis of a document that effectively legitimises attempts to destroy any chance of an independent sovereign Palestine?”

How Much More Can Palestinians

be asked to compromise?

The Member of Parliament for Aberavon said, “But if one is seeking to restart negotiations, one needs to do so on the basis of a plan that has legitimacy. It is not possible to move forward if the plan is actually based on breaking the law. Countless UN resolutions have pointed out that the settlements, as they stand, are illegal, so that has to be taken off the table before there is even a basis for starting to talk. That is why it is perfectly understandable why the Palestinian Authority is refusing to engage on that basis. The Foreign Secretary and his Ministers continue to present the Trump-Netanyahu plan as a basis for talks. They ask the Palestinians to compromise, yet the Palestinians have already ceded 78% of their land to Israel. How much more can they be asked to compromise?”

Britain being seen as an honest broker

Rushanara Ali MP for Bethnal Green & Bow asked: The position the UK Government have taken actually puts at risk Britain being seen as an honest broker. In reply to that, The MP for Aberavon said, “I agree entirely. This country has a unique place in history and a unique responsibility, particularly if we trace this back to the Balfour declaration. It is vital that everything this Government say and do honours the commitments in that declaration.”

Threat to the feasibility of a two-state solution

Labour MP for East Ham Stephen Timms asked the question: Does he agree that the developments he is now describing pose a threat to the feasibility of a two-state solution, because there will not be enough left for a viable state in Palestine to be established? In reply to that the Member for Aberavon said: “If one looks at the map, one sees it is not really a viable geographical area anymore; it is an archipelago of patches of land that are no longer connected to each other. E1 and E2 would in many ways represent the final nail in the coffin of the two-state solution in my view.”

Huge Settlement Plan of 7,000 units

“Building on E1 is more of a danger to the two-state outcome than the formal annexation of parts of the west bank. It has long been seen by the UK, France and Germany as a red line. Another huge settlement plan of 7,000 units has been approved at Efrat to the south of Bethlehem, often labelled E2. In both cases, the reality is that the Israeli Government hold all the cards, while the Palestinian Authority have limited power and must rely on international solidarity,” mentioned by Stephen Kinnock MP..

Abraham Accords- Reality is the creeping

Annexation of their land increasing and accelerating

Stephen Kinnock said, “Those who take a more sympathetic view of the actions of the Israeli Government will no doubt point to the so-called Abraham accords, which were signed by UAE and Bahrain at the White House on 13 August, and which commit those states to the normalisation of relations with Israel. Yet the reality is that the Abraham accords are simply the formalisation of pre-existing and well-established relations between the signatories. Those states have been working together for years on joint military operations, coups and counter-revolutions. For the Palestinian people, nothing has changed. The reality is the creeping annexation of their land continuing and accelerating.”

Press the Israeli government to pull back

From creeping annexation and re-engage in talks

Member for Aberavon also mentioned, “Actions speak louder than words. The question we must therefore address today is how the British Government can use their position as a leading member of the international community to press the Israeli Government to pull back from creeping annexation and to re-engage in talks on the basis of a viable two-state solution. The problem we face is that the deadlock will continue as long as Israel rejects any deal that includes Jerusalem and does not mean Israel keeps the Jordan valley, rejects a sovereign viable Palestinian state, and will negotiate only on the basis of a plan that annexes occupied territory and includes total security control on any Palestinian entity, including control of all borders. Israel must drop those preconditions. There have already been some attempts by European states to assert their influence. For instance, 11 states, including the UK, Germany and France, joined in a démarche to the Israeli Foreign Ministry on 1 May opposing Netanyahu’s annexation plans. But together the international community must go further.”

Explore the potential for International

Criminal Court to play a role

Member for Aberavon said, “We should explore the potential for the International Criminal Court to play a role. The Israeli Attorney General’s office has already warned the Israeli Prime Minister that annexation could trigger an investigation of “senior Army officers, civil service officials and heads of regional councils of West Bank settlements”.”

UK government takes immediate steps with urgency

Stephen Kinnock MP suggested some immediate steps should be taken by the UK Government with urgency. He said, “It is essential that the UK condemns any further creeping annexation, but condemnation alone will never be enough. To this end, the UK Government must take the following steps with urgency.

(a) Immediately recognise the state of Palestine

“First, they must immediately recognise the state of Palestine on the basis of the 1967 lines. The UK Government argue that recognition should follow successful negotiations, but the logic of this argument is deeply flawed and partisan. It suggests that we are happy to see a 53-year-old occupation persist, legitimising the illegal actions of the Israeli Government and contributing to the brutality and violence that shame us all.

(b)Government Must Ban All Products

originated from Israeli Settlements

“Secondly, the Government must ban all products that originate from Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. Profiting from such products is tantamount to profiting from the proceeds of crime, and it must stop. When we trade with these settlements, we are essentially telling the world that international law does not matter, and such trade legitimises and facilitates the existence and expansion of the settlements. In 2014, it was right that the UK, as part of the European Union, prohibited trade with Crimea following its illegal annexation by Russia. It is crucial that we are consistent in our application of international law.”

(c) End the involvement of UK-based companies

within the illegal settlements

“Thirdly, the Government must act to end the involvement of UK-based companies within the illegal settlements. In March, the UN published a list of companies that are involved in the settlements, which included JCB, Opodo and Greenkote PLC. Charities actively involved in illegal settlement projects should not be eligible for the privileges of charitable status, including tax exemption. What steps will our Government now take to hold these companies and charities to account? I look forward to hearing the Minister’s views on these points. These measures must be put in place immediately: no more excuses, and no more obfuscation from this Government.

Easy to forget the human cost of this conflict

The Member for Aberavon also mentioned, “Standing here in the Chamber today, it is easy to forget the human cost of this conflict. Visiting the west bank and East Jerusalem with Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East and the Council for Arab-British Understanding in 2014, I saw how the settlements touched the lives of those in the occupied territories. I think of the father from Gaza I met in Makassed hospital who was nursing his four-year-old double-amputee son and worrying about his wife in another hospital 20 miles away, who had also had both her legs amputated. I think of the Bedouin community of Khan al-Ahmar, whose residents live in perpetual fear of military demolitions and harassment. I think of the quarter of a million children across the Palestinian territories who the UN identifies as in need of psychosocial support and child protection interventions. What future can these children look forward to? What hope can we offer them? A 10-year-old child in Gaza will already have witnessed three wars and nothing but the siege.”

Act Now

Stephen Kinnock MP for Aberavon emphasized, “I therefore rise today to convey this simple message to the Minister: act now. Act now to show that Britain is still a country that will give voice to the voiceless and stand up for the rights of the oppressed. Act now to show that Britain is still a beacon of hope and a country that stands tall in the world and strives relentlessly for peace and justice. Act now to help us to believe that yours is a Government who still believe in the rule of law.”

The Minister for the Middle East

And North Africa (James Cleverly)

The Minister for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) said, “I am genuinely grateful that the hon. Member for Aberavon (Stephen Kinnock) secured this debate on what is a sensitive but incredibly important issue. A number of Members from all parts of the House have highlighted that since initially being given a date for this debate, much has changed in Israel’s situation and its relationship with its regional neighbours and the Palestinian people.”

Middle Eastern Peace process

a complex and sensitive issue

Speaking about the Middle Eastern Peace Process, the Minister James Cleverly said, “The middle eastern peace process continues to be a complex and sensitive issue. I cannot really do it full justice in the time allocated today.”

Welcome the announcement of normalisation

of relations between Israel, UAE and Bahrain

The Minister for MENA also mentioned, “We warmly welcome the recent announcements of the normalisation of relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. All three countries are good friends to the United Kingdom. We welcome that their relations have improved. I recognise the points that the hon. Member made about it formalising what was, in many instances, a pre-existing relationship, but that public formalisation really matters. As has already been discussed, it has unlocked direct flights through Saudi airspace, which is another significant issue. I do hope that it has also shown the leadership of the PA that there is a shift in mood among Arabic neighbours. They should recognise that and take this as an opportunity to positively engage with a dialogue for future peace.”

We desire a stable, secure and

peaceful two-state solution

The Minister for the MENA said, We desire a stable, secure and peaceful two-state solution. He said, “We desire a stable, secure and peaceful two-state solution, with a thriving Israel next door to a thriving Palestine based on 1967 borders, with agreed land swaps, Jerusalem as the shared capital of both states and fair, agreed and realistic settlements for refugees. We continue to believe that a two-state solution is the only viable long-term solution for the area. More than that, as a good friend of Israel, we genuinely believe it is in Israel’s best interests to also have a viable Palestinian state so that it can maintain its desired future as a Jewish democratic state.”

UK’s position on annexation

The Minister explained UK’s position on annexation to the House in clear and unambiguous terms. He said, “The UK’s position on annexation is that it would be a violation of international law. It would be counterproductive to securing peace, and it would be a significant blow to a viable two-state solution. As a lifelong friend, admirer and supporter of Israel—

The Minister gave way to Zarah Sultana who said, “In August, the Labour party announced that should annexation take place, we would call for a boycott of goods sourced in the occupied territories.” She asked, “Does the Minister agree that this would demonstrate a genuine commitment to the rights of the Palestinian people and international law?”

We Oppose Annexation – Said The Minister

About boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel, the Minister for MENA said, “The UK Government have a long-standing position to oppose the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement towards the state of Israel, but more than that, it is better that we prevent annexation from taking place. We have made the case, through our excellent bilateral relationships, that we oppose annexation. The Prime Minister has consistently made it clear, as a vocal friend of the state of Israel, that he opposes annexation. He expressed this publicly in an article in the Israeli media and directly, including in a phone call with Prime Minister Netanyahu on 6 July. The Foreign Secretary raised this in Jerusalem on the 24 August with Prime Minister Netanyahu, Alternate Prime Minister Gantz and Foreign Minister Ashkenazi, and I outlined our opposition to such moves at the UN Security Council on 24 June. Our position is clear on that.”

“As a strong friend of Israel, and a friend who stood up for Israel when it faced biased and unreasonable criticism, we are continuing to urge Israel not to take steps in this direction and for annexation to be permanently removed as an option,” The Minister maintained.

Settlements are Illegal under international

Law - the Minister said

In reply to another question from Jim Shannon, the Minister mentioned, “The UK’s position on settlements is also clear. Again, they are illegal under international law and present an obstacle to a sustainable two-state solution. We want to see a contiguous west bank, including East Jerusalem, as part of a viable sovereign Palestinian state, based on the 1967 borders.”

“In 2016, the UK supported UN Security Council resolution 2334, which states that Israeli settlement activity “constitutes a flagrant violation” of international law and “has no legal validity”. This is the long-standing position of the UK Government, and we are able to have these very direct conversations with the Israeli Government because we are friends—long-standing and close friends of the Israeli people and the Israeli Government. That gives us the opportunity to have these frank and sometimes difficult discussions,” The Minister for Middle East and Nprth Africa mentioned.

UK Government maintains support to

United Nations Relief and Works Agency

Referring to the question by The hon. Member for Strangford (Jim Shannon) and  paying tribute to the hon. Member for Oxford West and Abingdon (Layla Moran), who injected a very moving, personal contribution; the Minister for MENA said, “We must always remember that this is not just about lines on maps and international power politics—this is actually about people. That is why the UK Government maintain our support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, to help those people who are suffering because of this unresolved situation.

Businesses and Activities in the Occupied Territories

The Minister for MENA also referred to the contributions of The hon. Member for Stirling (Alyn Smith), who asked about businesses and their activities in the occupied territories. He said, “We give guidance to businesses and ultimately it is a decision for individual companies whether to operate in settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, but the British Government absolutely do not encourage or support such activities. As I have said, the British Government firmly oppose boycotts of Israel, but we understand the concerns of people who do not wish to purchase goods exported from Israeli settlements near the OPTs. It was in order to allow consumers to have that choice that in December 2009 the UK Government introduced voluntary guidance to enable products from Israeli settlements near the OPTs to be specifically labelled as such.”

This debate is about protecting the

viability of a peaceful, secure state

The Minister, James Cleverly MP concluded by saying, “the debate I will close with a reminder that this debate is about protecting the viability of a peaceful, secure state of Israel, and a peaceful and secure state for the Palestinian people. There is an opportunity, and we have encouraged the Palestinian Authority to engage with Israel, the United States of America, its Arab neighbours and friends, and the UK, to put a counter-offer on the table. We know that President Trump is someone who likes to do a deal, and we strongly urge our friends in the region to take him up on the offer.”

Stephen Kinnock

Stephen Kinnock, the Member for Aberavon thanked all the members present at this rich and multifaceted debate. But he said, “If I had to distil it, I think there are five really important points that we need to take away from it.” He mentioned:

“First, the UAE deal has not stopped annexation. The settlements continue. Planning has been approved for 3,500 new units in E1 and 7,000 in E2. It is blatantly not the case that annexation and settlements have stopped, so we should shoot that fox.

“Secondly, the Trump plan has to be taken off the table. It is not a viable basis for negotiations. It represents the breaking of international law.

“Thirdly, the British Government must recognise Palestine immediately, on the basis of 1967 lines; otherwise, we are simply not having a realistic or constructive engagement in this process.

“Fourthly, on banning trade in products, the Minister kept saying that this is about banning trade in products from Israel, but it is not Israel that we are talking about. The illegal settlements are not Israel. They are illegally occupied territory that should belong to the Palestinians, as my hon. Friend the Member for Coventry South (Zarah Sultana) correctly pointed out.

“Finally, we need to act against those British companies that are involved in the illegal settlements. It is all very well having guidelines and encouragement, but that is clearly not working. It is time for the British Government to step up to the plate. It is time for tangible action. Hand wringing and expressions of outrage will no longer cut it. We need to see action, and we need to see it now.”

Question put and agreed to.

Tawheed in the Light of Covid-19

Dr al-Dubayan on Covid-19 and Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) Dr. Mozammel Haque

Islam have been in this world from the very beginning of this universe which Allah Subhanahu wa Taala created and sent prophets with Revealed Books for the Guidance of Mankind. The Message throughout history and centuries is Tawheed, i.e. There is no god but Allah; HE is the ONLY One to be worshipped. This is known as Tawheed, which is the heart and soul of all revealed religions. It started from the beginning down to the last and final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them all).

In order to understand Tawheed, we have to understand the different meanings of Tawheed. We must remember that Tawheed is the Message of all the Prophets (peace and blessings upon them all). Tawheed is the word of Liberation. It is the word of liberation of heart and soul. Prophet, the deliverer of the Message, liberates man from anybody and establishes connection with Allah Subhanahu wa Taala directly. Tawheed is the word of liberating anybody from any belonging. As part of the Tawheed you know nothing is happening without the Will of Allah; nothing is happening without HIS Control and HIS Domination on everything in our life and our destiny. Tawheed and this crisis: Coronavirus. There is wisdom behind this Covid-19. The other meaning which must be remembered during this time of crisis Allah is the ONLY One who can lift this crisis and Who can save us. We worship ONE God – Allah as ONE God. Only Allah can solve our problem. Allah accepts only pure, clear thing just for HIM with that intention. Another meaning of Tawheed is: there is no mediator between Allah and you. obody. Allah also said life has all the difficulties and sufferings.

Lecture on Covid-19 and Tawheed by Dr. Ahmad al-Dubayan Via Zoom London Central Mosque Trusts & The Islamic Cultural Centre, London organised a Lecture on Tawheed in the Light of Covid-19 via Zoom Session on Saturday, 25 July, 2020. Speaking on Covid-19 and Tawheed , Dr. Ahmad al-Dubayan, Director General of the London Central Mosque Trust & the Islamic Cultural Centre, London, said, “The message of Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala, the Prophet, the deliverer of the Message liberates from all other connections or any other source as god as Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala and only with Allah directly. It liberates you from anybody which is standing between you and Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala and the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Wa Sallam is the deliverer of the message. He delivers the message to establish our connection with Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. This meaning we should always have in everything in our life, in our ritual and in our Ibadah and in our Iman.” Tawheed is the word of Liberation “For example, when we go to pray we remember that we pray for Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. This comes from the Tawheed. Because we believe Allah is One and He is the Only One to be worshipped and He deserves that. And we remember this meaning when we pray; Tawheed is there. When Ramadan comes then we fast; we fast only for Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. That means Tawheed is there. When we give Zakat, when we go to Makkah for Hajj, Insha Allah all of us who are listening, when you go there, you go there just for the sake of Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala,” mentioned Dr al-Dubayan. Oneness of Allah is the Dominant meaning in the whole of Islam The ICC Chief also said, “Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) itself believing in Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala is the dominant meaning in the whole of Islam. Without it, Islam lost the basis of the belief and it’s the thing that Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala accepts from everybody on the Day of Judgement. When somebody does not have the Tawheed then everything he is doing actually useless. Tawheed is not there. That’s why this meaning is very important. Tawheed is the word of liberation – of your heart and soul. When you have a problem you go to Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala; you only rely in your life on Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. As a part of Tawheed you know that nothing is going to happen or nothing is happening without the Will of Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. Nothing is happening without His Control and His Domination on everything in your life and your destiny again.” There is wisdom behind this Covid-19 Dr. al-Dubayan mentioned, “Of course, what is happening now, that is Covid-19 or coronavirus.

This thing, of course, as Muslims, we believe with the Will of Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. What Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala wants from this, remember them in the light of Tawheed. May be Allah want us to wake up about something that we are doing in our life; they are wrong; we are practising. May be Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala want to have flashback to His Path. May be Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala want to punish some people, may be Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala want to re-write some people’s life again from the beginning. I know many of us lost some friends or some members of their families - May Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala have mercy on them.” Tawheed and this crisis – Allah is the Only One Who can lift this crisis – who can save us Dr. al-Dubayan also maintained, “There is wisdom behind this. This is how we see this relation between Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala in the light of Tawheed. The real Mumin – the one who believes and understands Islam in the right way - he/she will do his/her best to protect himself/herself and the society and at the same time he/she will never lose hope of Allah; he/she will believe Allah is doing the best. Allah is sending us in a way that he/she HE wants us to go there for a reason; may be the reason is clear; may be the reason arises later on but the trust that we have on Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala will never – whatever happens – we will never lose; that is one of the meaning of Tawheed and this crisis – that is Allah is the Only One who can lift this crisis, who can save us. And we go back to HIM, we try to increase and make our relation with HIM better through practising, through good deeds, through worship and try to do our best and may be this is one of the reasons that good people will try to be better and bad people will try to be good and this is one of the reasons we see Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala how much He has power works in the world and how much He is powerful Himself that He shows us and that we see around us through this crisis, through this pandemic, through this disease everywhere in the world.” We Worship One God – Allah as ONE GOD Dr. Al-Dubayan also said, “At the same time this is also one of the meanings of Tawheed.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala wants us not to be seen individually – separate from each other – we try to help each other, again for the sake of Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala because we believe we worship ONE God – Allah as ONE God. Then all the world is one society, we try to help everybody, as a Message of Tawheed you are spreading to everybody; you try to help everybody – Muslims or non-Muslims – we try to convey the message peacefully to the people; we try to show the kindness of Islam; the kindness of Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala wants to represent to do. You do it every day many times through these difficult days then people like and people will realize how much you are connected with them; how much you are trying to help and Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala sees that in your intentions. Secondly, He sees in your actions, in your deeds and that will help to be more clear and even to be more accepted and even to be more forgiven by Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala.” Tawheed is the Message of All the Prophets Speaking about the continuity of the Message of Tawheed throughout the centuries and throughout all the Prophets, Dr al-Dubayan mentioned, “Tawheed (ONENESS of Allah) is also the message of all the prophets – all Prophets Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala sent them to mankind to deliver this message. Tawheed is also the basic. All of them came with one word – There is no god except Allah and HE is the Only One Who deserves to be worshipped – God – Allah –worship HIM Alone. All the Prophets – Noah, Abraham, Issac, Joseph, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad – peace be upon all of them. They came to deliver the same message but in every time we will find messenger who is coming for people and may be we will find sometimes some differences among or between some religions or among religions, in rituals, even some instructions, some teachings – but the Tawheed is the same, never been changed; because it is the basic.” “You will find this Tawheed in the message of Noah; you will find this in the message of Abraham; you will find this with all of them. All the prophets and messengers down from the beginning, down till you reach the last one who is Prophet Muhammad peace be upon all of them. They delivered the same message but sometimes with some teachings, relative may be food, what to eat, marriage, how to worship but the basic, the Tawheed, actually remains the same, permanent, unchangeable,” explained Dr. al-Dubayan. Tawheed is the word of liberating anyone person from any belonging Explaining another meaning of Tawheed, Dr. al-Dubayan said, “One of the meanings of Tawheed - and this is really very important – Tawheed is the word of liberating any person from any belonging except Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala in the world, in his life, and looking at his life till the end of Akhirah; that means practically how we can implement this in our life; that means when we face a problem we go first to Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala; no problem, if other people can help me, if anybody if my friends some people, my family can help me; that’s why with this help that I got from other people I still have in my heart it is with Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala.” Only Allah Can solve our problem “When I have a problem, that is Only Allah can solve it for me; nobody can do anything; then any other practice or ritual or like some people; some people sometimes they go to certain areas in the world; they think if you go there, you will be closer, you will be accepted. No.
Go directly to Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala and as we know Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala does not consider how much money we have; how many people we have; from which country or race - we came. No. Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala looks at our hearts; Allah sees the hearts, Rasullullah Sallullahu Alaiye Wa Sallam said in the Hadith Allah sees the hearts, the actions; that’s why, based on this one if you do anything with the intention, not purely for Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala; because of the Tawheed, it will not be accepted,” mentioned the ICC chief. Allah Accepts Only Pure thing Just for HIM with intention Dr. al-Dubayan mentioned, “Sadaqa or giving to any people; or if you are doing something like show or propaganda for himself or advertisement for his company, not for Allah, it will not be accepted. Allah accepts only the pure thing, that is clear thing, just for Him with the intention and when you do this, you will see His blessings; you will see how His investment you are doing in your life with Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. How that will be reflected in your work - you will see His grace and blessings. Sometimes you will see blessings in your health; sometimes you will see His blessings in money; sometimes you will see His blessings in your children; sometimes you will see His blessings in your wealth. There are some blessings in your life, you don’t know; don’t pay attention. Nobody. Nobody can say to you, you will never be forgiven because the forgiveness is in His hands.

Nobody can say to you, well, this will not be accepted.” Nobody No mediator between you and Allah Speaking about mediator between you and Allah and nobody can say you will not be forgiven, Dr al-Dubayan said, “If people do something in social media, in the TV, No. If they did this for themselves, Alhamdo lillah another blessing. Allah wants to be seen. My intention from the beginning is for the sake of Allah and not for anybody. This is the message of Tawheed. This is the message of Liberation of your mind from mediator between you and Allah and nobody can play the role of mediator; nobody can hold his hand the key of forgiveness from Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. Nobody. Nobody can say to you that you will never be forgiven, because forgiven is in His hands. Nobody can say to you, well, this will not be accepted, this person will go to paradise and the other person will go to Hell. Nobody. Nobody can decide. This is only in the hands of Allah. This is only in the Hands of Allah. All you need to do in your life is to do your best to follow the teachings and at the same time to have real intentions, pure intentions in your heart and doing this for the sake of Allah and not for anybody else, not for any award from anybody and not to be thanked by other people.” “Those people who have this real meaning of Tawheed in their hearts you will see that during the difficult days like these days and those people who have this meaning very weak in their hearts they will collapse. That’s why we read, for example, some biographies of some old scholars and the compatriots of the prophet peace be upon him or/and with the Prophet Sallallahu wa Sallam peace be upon him himself; we see in their biographies how much they were tested in their life; how many difficulties they faced in their life, a lot. And they passed through these occasions, they were so patient, they never lose their iman, they never be weak actually; why? How come this thing happened? because the meaning of Tawheed is very dear, bright as a sun in their hearts; they don’t lose it. And when this meaning is very weak in their hearts you can understand all the difficulties in your life,” explained Dr. al-Dubayan. Life has all the difficulties and sufferings The ICC Director General said, “Life has all the difficulties and if you have everything, and everything is available for you, you still have some difficulties in life. Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala said we have created mankind in caved, caved means sufferings; there is a kind of sufferings in life. Very few are healthy, may be, you have a problem of your health; you are wealthy, may be whatever; There will be problems in your life in a way or another; sufferings is always there.” “That means you have to have the meanings of Tawheed always alive and very clear in your hearts. Those who have it you will find them firm and really stable during the difficult days.

Those who have this very weak in their hearts they will collapse. We heard now, for example, some people committed suicide during these days of corona; why these people did this? Because they are actually at home; doing nothing, many of them lost their jobs, may be I know it is difficult for everybody. But our hope must always be there. May Allah forgive everybody and help everybody during this crisis time,” mentioned Dr. al-Dubayan. Dr. al-Dubayan also mentioned, “This meaning of this will prevent us from such a thing to ourselves because there must be a benefit; there must be a meaning from Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala. We just wait and if you wait and if you are patient, Allah will reward you for your patience. Patience would be rewarded for that. At the same time one day Sun will rise, of course, to this world again without this problem we are having today and we still have a great meaning of the Tawheed; strong meaning of Tawheed – firm and stable and so deep in our hearts controlling everything in our life. This is the meaning of Tawheed and also it is established or it established a direct connection with Allah. You do not need anybody in the middle. This is very important, “May be, you ask somebody who is a good person to make dua for you; but dua does not mean this person is between you and Allah. Nobody is between you and Allah. Even the Prophet peace be upon him who delivered the message passed away, we read the Sunnah, we read the Qur’an but when we come to pray and when we make dua; we go directly to Allah, we do not go to the Prophet Sallallahu Wa Sallama with all the respect and the privilege and darood and salam going to Makkah,” said ICC Chief. Our Direction Goes to Allah, Not to anything else Speaking about Makkah and the Ka’abah itself, Dr al-Dubayan said, “Makkah is the House. Makkah itself – That Ka’abah itself; may be some non-Muslims with the hearing Muslim saying that Ka’abah is the House of Allah – they think that the Muslim believes Allah is there physically. This is not the meaning of Tawheed. If anybody who is not Muslim, who is with us now and who is following this lecture must correct this. We believe this House is honoured by Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala but the Ka’abah itself throughout the history was rebuilt and our directions go to Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala, not to anybody else. HE is the Creator; HE is the One Who has control of our Destiny; HE is the One Who has Plan us; HE is the One Who can forgive our sins; HE is the One Who controls this life and Hereafter. And this is the meaning of Tawheed, which has taken from the first pillar of Islam.”

The Month of Muharram: Its Importance and Significance Dr. Mozammel Haque

The Islamic Calendar is based on the Lunar Calendar consisting of 354-355 days annually and is 10-11 days shorter than the Solar Calendar. The Lunar month is based on the time it takes the moon to complete a single orbit around the earth and it is just over 29 and half days. There are many advantages to the Lunar Calendar. For example, the various dates in the Islamic Calendar such as Ramadan and Hajj rotate every year and are not fixed like the Solar year. People, therefore, will perform acts of worship in various climatic conditions and in different length of hours in submission to the Will of Allah where human imagination plays no part. Origin of the Hijri Calendar The Islamic Calendar was first introduced by the close companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), the second Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) in 16 AH/637 AD. During his leadership of the Muslim community in approximately, 637 AD, he consulted with his advisors in order to come to a decision regarding the various dating systems used at that time. It was agreed that the appropriate reference point for the Islamic Calendar was the Hijrah, since it was an important turning point for the Muslim community. The event of Hijrah, the migration of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 AD was chosen to begin the Islamic Calendar because it was the first major sacrifice made by the whole Muslim Ummah for the preservation of Islam in its formative period. After the emigration to Madinah (formerly known as Yathrib), the Muslims were able to organise and establish the first real Muslim community, the real Islamic state with social, political, and economic independence. Muharram the First Month of the Islamic Calendar Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Calendar. There are twelve months in the Islamic Calendar. As the Qur'an says: Lo! The number of the months with Allāh is twelve months by Allāh’s Ordinance in the day that He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred: that is the right religion. So wrong not yourselves in them...(Al-Qur'an - 9:36) "It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory, and the moon to be a light of beauty, and measured out stages for it, that you might know the number of years and the count of time. Allah did not create this except in truth and righteousness. And He explains His signs in detail, for those who understand" (10:5). In his final sermon before his death, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, among other things, "With Allah the months are twelve; four of them are holy; three of these are successive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumaada and Sha'ban." The four sacred months (al-Asshhur al-Hurum) are Rajab, Dhul Qa‘dah, Dhul Hijjah and Muharram. Out of the four sacred months, Muharram has been blessed with certain specific virtues. The companions were also consulted on which month should mark the beginning of the year, Caliph Umar al-Khattab and Uthman ibn Affaan (May Allah be pleased with them), chose Al-Muharram due to it being a sacred month and because it follows the month of Dhul Hijjah, which is when the Muslims perform Hajj – or the pilgrimage, which was the last pillar of Islam that Allah enjoined upon the Muslims. Al-Muharram also follows the month in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pledged allegiance to the Ansar (his Madinain supporters) to emigrate to Madinah and this pledge of Allegiance was one of the introductory acts of emigration. Due to all these reasons, Al-Muharram was deemed the most suitable month to begin the Islamic Calendar. Muharram the first month of the Islamic Calendar, were considered sacred. Muharram is so called because it was unlawful to fight during this month; the word is derived from the word “haram” meaning forbidden. The month of Muharram is also of great religious significance to Muslims the world over. It is held to be the most sacred of all the months, excluding Ramadan. The word “Muharram” is often considered synonymous with “Ashura”, the tenth day of the month of Muharram. Fasting in the month of Muharram Fasting is advocated in the month of Muharram. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The best fasts after the fasts of Ramadan are those of the month of Muharram.” Although the fasts of the month of Muharram are not obligatory, yet one who fasts in these days out of his own will is entitled to a great reward by Allah the Almighty. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadhan is the fasting of Allah's month of Muharram." (Muslim) In another Hadeeth, Ibn Abbas reports: "that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) said: "The one that keeps a fast in the month of Muharram will receive the reward of thirty fasts for each fast (in this sacred month)." (Tabraani) Although the fasts of the month of Muharram are not obligatory, the one who fasts in these days out of his own will and choice is entitled to a great reward by Almighty Allah. The Hadith citied above signifies that the fasts of the month of Muharram are the most rewardable among the Nafl fasts i.e. the fasts one observes out of his own choice without being obligatory on him. 10th day of Muharram (Aashora) Although the month of Muharram is a sacred month as a whole, the 10th of Muharram is the most sacred among all its days. The day is named “Ashurah”. It is one of the most important and blessed days of Allah in the Islamic Calendar. Some ulama (Scholars) are of the opinion that before the fasts of Ramadan, the fast of the day of Ashura was compulsory upon the Ummah. This is stated in a Hadith reported by A'ishah that the beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the observance of the fast of Ashura. However, when the fast of Ramadan became compulsory, then whosoever wished, kept this fast and whosoever desired did not observe the fast. (Bukhari) Ibn Abbas reported, “I did not see Rasulullah sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam anxiously await the fast of any day, which he gave preference to over other days, but this day, the day of Ashura.” (Bukhari) It is also said by scholars that since the beginning of this world, Ashura day has been a very important day. On this day great signs of Allah’s power and glory have appeared in the world. On this day many Prophets were born and they were instituted to the office of prophecy. On this day, Prophets, Saints and Sincere servants of Allah were blessed with miracles and spiritual powers.
On Ashura Day the following have taken place: 1. Repentance of Prophet Adam (Allah’s blessing be upon him) was accepted by Allah 2. The ship of Prophet Nuh (Noah) (Allah’s blessing be upon him) came to rest on a mountain called Al-Judi. 3. Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (Allah’s blessings be upon him) was born on this day. 4. He got the title Khalil-ullah (friend of Allah) on this day. 5. The fire in which Prophet Ibrahim (Allah’s blessings be upon him) was thrown by the king Namrud become cool and means of safety for Prophet Ibrahim, by the order of Allah. 6. Allah delivered Prophet Ayub (Job) (Allah’s blessings be upon him) from distress and he was restored to prosperity. 7. By the Grace of Allah, Prophet Yunas (Jonah) (Allah’s blessings be upon him), after being swallowed by a huge fish (whale) for forty days, was casted out on the shore. 8. Prophet Mussa (Moses) (Allah’s blessings be upon him) got victory over Pharaoh. 9. Prophet Suleman (Solomon) (Allah’s blessings be upon him) was made a king to rule over mankind, Jins, Animals and the air. 10. Prophet Idris (Enoch) (Allah’s blessings be upon him) and Prophet Issa (Jesus) (Allah’s blessings be upon him) were lifted up alive. 11. Imam Hussain (Allah be pleased with him), the grandson of our beloved Prophet, got martyred at Karbala in Iraq. 12. The day of resurrection and judgement will take place on this day (Ashura) (Ghunia-Al-Talibeen & Tafseer-e-Sawi)
The practice of fasting on Ashura was known even in the days of Jajiliyyah, before the Prophet's mission. It was reported that A'ishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said: “The people of Jahiliyyah used to fast on that day.” It is also reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to fast on Ashura in Makkah, before he migrated to Madinah. Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The best of fasting after Ramadan is fasting Allah's month of Muharram.'” (Reported by Muslim, 1982) Fasting on the day of Ashura (10th Muharram) According to the Holy companion, Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him), when the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) migrated to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram. They said that it was the day on which the Holy Prophet Musa Alayhis Salaam and his followers crossed the Red Sea miraculously, and the Pharaoh was drowned in its water. On hearing this from the Jews, the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam said, “We are more closely related to Musa than you.” So the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam directed the Muslims to fast on the day of Ashura. (Abu Dawood) According to another Hadith, it is more advisable that the fast of Ashura should be either preceded or succeeded by an additional fast. It means that one should fast two days: the 9th and 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th . The reason of this additional fast as mentioned by the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam was that the Jews used to fast on the day of Ashura alone, and the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam wanted to distinguish the Islamic-way of fasting from that of the Jews. Therefore, he advised Muslims to add another fast to the day of Ashura. Let us observe this great day according to the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and refrain from all innovations which deprive us of the blessings from Allāh the Almighty. May Allāh guide us all upon the Straight Path and save us from every act which brings His Displeasure. Āmeen. Our Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu wa Sallam said he is the seal of the Prophets. Rasullullah Sallallahu wa Sallam conveyed the message of Allah. He affirmed the message with other Prophets’ of God. Perfection of Deen On the Arafah Day Allah Subhanahu wa Taala made the announcement of the Perfection of your Deen and showed all His best favours on you. And this Perfection of Deen is to worship only Allah Subhanahu wa Taala and Allah only. This is the Deen of five pillars. The five pillars of Islam comprise: correct beliefs about Allah, His Angels, His Books and His Messengers and the Last Day as well as the correct belief about Allah’s preordainment, its results are perceived to be good or bad. Allah Subhanahu wa Taala said to mankind that We have sent among you a Messenger who is of your own. He read the Qur’an, reciting to you our evidences, purifying you and teaching you the Qur’an and the Sunnah and teaching you what you have no knowledge of. Therefore, make mention of Me, if you do so I will make mention of you; be grateful to Me and do not be ungrateful of My favours.
Perseverance through hardships Therefore, O Believers, seek help from Allah Subhanahu wa Taala by way of patience, perseverance and prayers. Allah is certainly with those who patiently persevere. Thus, after that, Allah Subhanahu wa Taala mentioned the blessings of sending His Messenger. Allah instructed us to mention Him, be grateful to Him and persevere for Him. Another component of Taqwa is persevering through difficulties one faces which may cause him pain. Allah Subhanahu wa Taala said that those who remains patience, remains steadfast at the time of extreme poverty and illnesses, people who have these qualities they are the ones who have been true to Allah and they are the ones who observe Taqwa. Allah will test with fear, hunger My dear audience, life in this world does not free of difficulty. And this is why Allah Subhanahu wa Taala instructed us to persevere and We shall certainly test you with instances of fear and hunger as well as loss of wealth, lives and fruits. However, Messenger of Allah, you are to convey glad tidings to those who patiently persevere they are the people who, when afflicted with adversaries. “say, “We all most certainly belong to Allah alone and to Him alone we will all most certainly return.”
They are the ones whom their Lord will commend and grant mercy, and they are the ones who are soundly guided. Allah Subhanahu wa Taala also said, as for those who persevere, we shall most certainly reward them according to the best deeds they had performed. Allah’s Preordainment and Decree How could a servant of Allah not persevere if he has sound belief about Allah’s preordainment and decree? He unwaveringly believes that anything which befell him would not have missed him; in that even if everyone throughout the entire Earth gather together to avert what Allah decreed to happen to him, they would remain unable. As it has been explained in the Qur’an that anything which happened on earth is predestined and is written and preserved in Tablet in the Book of Allah and that is very easy for Allah Subhanahu wa Taala. All these afflictions and crisis and pandemic we suffer, this only re-enforces our belief and trust in Allah, in the Creator, in the Sustainer of the world. Allah Subhanahu wa Taala said that don’t you see that Allah has put at your service all the things which are in Heaven and Earth. Don’t you see the whole Universe is serving the humanity on turns turning towards Allah Subhanahu wa Taala and all good or bad experiences if you have, they all makers return to Allah Subhanahu wa Taala. And whatever is afflicted on earth it is just to give us the taste of some results of some of our actions and one has to repent as Allah Subhanahu wa Taala says men and women, believers and non-believers - all are put through trials and tribulations for them to pay heed to and ponder on this situations around us. Only the Jannah the final abode on the Day of Judgement will be the place where there are no worries, no hardships, anything to worry and there not to be afraid as Allah Subhanahu wa Taala has written. As it is also informed this in the Qur’an Allah Subhanahu wa Taala said do try with good and bad times and it is re-enforced and reasserted in the Qur’an that after every hardship there is ease, indeed after every hardship there is ease. In another place also Allah said that after hardship there is ease. Allah wants to facilitate for you, make it easy for you, He does not want to put you under stress.
Our Shariah has given enough guidance how to do on this earth in terms of economics, financial activities earning the livelihood, doing businesses and doing hard work to sustain life. May Allah bestow His blessing to His Messenger as well as to His Messenger’s family, his righteous companions and his followers who set the greatest of precedents and extended goodness and spreading the truth.
